Shawnee Nature


There is a natural mineral spring in Shawnee called Cottonwood Spring, located about a mile southwest of the mission, said to possess great healing powers. The Native American Indians called it's water "medicine water". Cottonwood Spring is where Fremont pitched his first camp after leaving Independence, Mo., on his tour across the plains, and is sometimes called Fremont's Spring.

The1,250-acre, Shawnee Mission Park, is the area's largest park with dozens of recreational facilities, which include concessions,  baseball, tennis, and hiking & biking trails an outdoor theater and a marina offering swimming, boating, sailboat and paddleboat rentals and fishing.
