Shawnee Nature

There is a natural mineral spring in Shawnee called Cottonwood Spring, located about a mile southwest of the mission, said to possess great healing powers. The Native American Indians called it's water "medicine water". Cottonwood Spring is where Fremont pitched his first camp after leaving Independence, Mo., on his tour across the plains, and is sometimes called Fremont's Spring.
